Often I include people I used to know as characters in my stories. This is one of those times. I am Chrissie and Nat is a guy I knew as a kid and then again when he dated a good friend of mine.

It is true, we often stayed up late chatting when our other-halves went to sleep. But we never fucked, which I think was probably for the best. But this story was inspired by how close we became because of those chats, and what may have happened if we’d let it!.

Nat and I had known each other on and off for most of our lives. At primary school, he was the strange boy with the stammer. I was the scrawny girl who played on the street. We’d look at each other and nod, recognising that the afflictions were not our fault, but rather a result of our home life.

We went to different senior schools and then one day shortly after starting college, my then best friend asked me to double-date. She had a new boyfriend. I’d been going steady for about a year, so was pleased she’d finally hooked up with a guy.

When Jim and I arrived at the pub and Jill introduced her guy, I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was Nat. He’d certainly changed — now he was a confident, attractive young man.

He looked me up and down, “Wow Chrissie, you’ve filled out a bit since I last saw you.” We laughed and explained to Jill and Jim our past connection.

That evening, we kept glancing at each other with longing in our eyes, and I think we both knew it was inevitable this thirst would eventually need to be quenched.

It turned out that Jim and Nat shared a love for football, so double dating became a regular event. Parties, restaurants, movies, and just hooking up in general. We got on so well…

But all the while, I was in waiting.

One day, the four of us had been hanging out at Nat’s house. Watching an old video and chatting. After, everyone crashed out in the living room — cushions and sleeping bags on the floor, very student like. His place was small and so couldn’t even fit two people in the bedroom.

As usual, Jim and Jill were asleep within minutes of settling down. And Nat and I chatted over their heavy breathing and occasional snores.

Eventually we moved to the sofa by the window so our voices wouldn’t wake them, and it was obvious we both wanted to talk about the topic of the movie. It had been an emotional plot focused on dysfunctional family life. We related to some of the scenes. Words flowed from each of us regarding personal life events which had been thrown our way and caused us to be the awkward, solitary kids we once knew.

While talking, tears fell. Sobs were stifled.

We held on tightly to each other, eyes locked, mouths only inches apart.

We had grown and defied our backgrounds. Survived.

And now, obviously overwhelmed by our disclosures, having expressed secrets we may not have yet told anyone else, we clung together.

Personally, I felt exorcised by our interaction and had a strong urge to give myself to him in return for what we had shared.

Compelled, I pulled back from the embrace and kissed him full and long.
